Would Patrick notice or care if SFWA went tits up because of his misuse of 100k of their funds? I bet not. In fact, I bet he'd be onto the Dickensian Authors Guild or Historical Fan Fiction Society or some other such organization, looking for money, before the final crying emoji was tweeted by a former SFWA member.

He's probably bitter and resentful that they didn't spend more money on him. If only they had hired COMPETENT lawyers for me I would have won the case.

juicy File 770 post from today has more details
Regarding GriefCom, the chair and co-chair of that committee resigned after being told their work would have to expand to writers not in SFWA due to its nonprofit status. I think this happened a year ago or more, and don’t think it’s related to the current situation. In fact, a number of writers I know received very condescending and dismissive emails from the former GriefCom chair which essentially blamed them for problems they were facing with publishers.

It’s been almost impossible to get answers about the current situation from the board, or even a very clear picture of what’s going on with other SFWA projects, because every board member and employee was made to sign what appears to be a very, very broad NDA. I have seen one of these, and it does not include any kind of end date, nor does it include detailed descriptions of what the people who signed it need to keep confidential.
🤔
Oz Drummond (bookkeeper and CPA) was a contractor. She resigned at the end of December, stayed a few months longer in a more limited capacity until March 2024.
March 2024, huh #paidquasi

lots of other resignations lately, with no hiring to replace them

Members fed up with how cagey and opaque SFWA is are petitioning SFWA to change it's bylaws to end NDAs (void existing ones) and have a "duty to disclose" requirement

In the last several years, SFWA has begun requiring its Board members, employees, and key volunteers to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to ensure confidentiality. However, recent events have shown that these NDAs cause more problems than they solve. Because the NDAs are overly broad without clear limits or expiration dates, they leave employees, Board members, and volunteers uncertain about what they can and cannot say without potential legal repercussions. Even more concerning is that these NDAs have created distrust between SFWA membership and the Board, and an environment where the perception exists that bad actors can mistreat others and violate SFWA’s bylaws with impunity.

There is no legal requirement for SFWA as a 501(c)(3) to use NDAs, for either its legal or tax status. Many nonprofits, both inside and outside California, function perfectly well without using NDAs,

Ukraine anthology project nuked for mysterious reasons
The last two years in particular, though, have been Kafkaesque, with projects that committees had spent dozens of hours working on being abruptly cancelled by the board with no notice or real rationale, and volunteers being blamed for failing to communicate when they ask what happened.
TLDR SFWA had volunteers work for 2 years on a Ukraine anthology, sent a check to a publisher, then retracted their support and demanded the check be shredded because they're scared it's against the law for a 501c3 to do that
“It also cannot be a SFWA grant because of the extent of work that International Committee members have put into it and the potential credit they may receive as editors in any format. Of course, we recognize that the participating committee members did not know their efforts could jeopardize the grant, but that does not change the end result. Scenarios involving self-dealing and nonprofits are extremely delicate. As soon as we get into parsing shades of exemptions, we’ve crossed into the territory of an appearance of Conflict of Interest. That is our boundary; not whether a situation is legally a conflict of interest, but whether it generates the appearance of one.”

So basically Pat and other hobbyists like him pushed their way into sfwa by forcing them to lower the standards for entry and now they shocked that A) being a member doesn't have any meaning or value and B) they can't run the organization like their own personal fiefdom due to legal restraints from being a non profit.

Knowing dorks like these they bristled at the fact that they couldn't legally restrict benefits to only members and repeatedly did things to try to get around it. Seems like a lot of their decisions (like yanking the funding on the Ukraine thing) was because someone in the board didn't want to hear that they couldn't find that. Then someone finally stepped on and said "listen retard, we could lose our non profit if you fuck around with this" and they pulled the check after letting people work on this for months. Id imagine there's tons of examples of this behavior causing SFWA to do sudden inexplicable things. Luckily those NDAs are so broad as to be basically unenforceable, and also NDAs can't compel you to cover for a person or organizations wrongdoing.

Sounds right. I also bet that a lot of these relatively unsuccessful people who took volunteer board/committee positions became petty tyrants to whatever extent was allowed. Treated perceived lessers like shit, didn’t listen to full-time staff, etc.

I'm convinced the sudden panic over making super extra sure they don't even appear to step outside of the 501c3 legal limits is a response to being called out for funding the frivolous lolsuit. As is the newfound need for NDAs in recent years.

but even if they voided the NDAs the faggots won't say shit because it's "mean" and "people were just trying to help" and "sfwa does good things".

I don't know how you have any pride in being a parasite to wrinkly sacks of shit, but at this rate he'll be back in the US permenantly soon enough, & I can't even imagine the misappropriation of funds occuring with him in any meeting - I bet if he asks for anything 'african' they'll feel obliged.

Shameful.
100% the NDA's and secret squirrel on accounting is down to Pat and the Lawsuit and the fear of losing 501c3

Did sfwa pay off Pat's debt to quasi? I still don't know if that was actually him getting cunty with the chat bot on that legal help site? But if it was he was lying his ass off. He said no one told him he could appeal. That's a proveable lie. He told Josiah he couldn't afford to appeal, and he said the same thing during one of the podcasts he was on. I think he started panicking when he realized that quasi wasn't going away and he started looking for someone to bail him out. I would love to see the emails he was sending to sfwa while they were "ghosting" him. I bet they're full of hysterical, histrionic threats and faggotry. If sfwa did pay off his judgement on top of funding his revenge suit and didn't disclose any of it to the members or claim it on their taxes, I dont think any NDA would prevent it from coming out eventually. Pat unintentionally did something cool by destroying sfwa, I can't wait to see how he handles the criticism from the pedo community once they find out what he did.
