It makes more sense that they prioritized it. Destroy the most visible and most-attended altars to send the message. What's the point in scouring the desert for already-forgotten ruins?

Why not the pyramids and Sphinx then? Because Egypt had been a Christian country for hundreds of years. By the time the Arabs conquered Egypt, the ancient monuments would've long been disassociated from any pagan meaning.

Where I come from, many of the old quaint little village churches are from Norman or Saxon times, and they have statuary or gargoyles that are pagan in nature, because the local Brythonic populace whom the invaders tried to convert and conquer weren’t too sure about this Xtian lark, even at sword point. So they had to do some syncretism and hope for the best.

Same with pagan Holy Wells (sites for offerings or rituals, usually), which became protected sites appended to churches for hundreds of years.
