I've got a friend who writes freelance for several very reputable publications. He's got a good degree from Cambridge and has ghost written 2 autobiographies for famous people. He tutors kids for Oxbridge entrance exams to make ends meet. This is a very smart guy who hustles and works hard and he can barely scrape together a living writing without supplementing from other income streams. He's also not fat and has a loving family and kids. Rick is doomed, basically.

Very true, unless you’re a big name like Stephen King you have to hustle to have a career as a writer. It’s similar to working in TV/Film production, you always need to be looking and working towards your next gig. That’s too much to ask a fat lazy bum like Pat.

And let's not forget that even Stephen King still puts out 1 to 2 novels a year. I haven't read one of his books for a while and apparently they're not getting better, but even he still works his ass off. He doesn't need to but he does.
