Even that dogshit "The Martian" author had little social media presence before his shitty book took off.

Published for free on his blog; the only reason he put it on Kindle for $1 is because people wanted an easy way to download it from there, and $1 was the minimum he could charge. It shot up the Kindle charts because it was cheap and good; and he got a movie offer via Matt Damon's company a week or two before the first offer from a book publisher.

Despite being a bitter prick that's rude and unpleasant to everyone, even people he claims he's an ally to, he'll always consider himself a good person because he "fights fascism". Fighting it by tweeting "fascism bad", not actually going out there and fighting it, that would require effort.

He’s just like every slacktivist on social media. He believes he’s one of the “good ones” while cheering anyone white that dies from Covid. He doesn’t leave his couch but actually believes he is changing the world. He wouldn’t even go to BLM rally until it was majority white and next to a McDonald’s
