If the script doesn't specifically describe the character as being white, I'd feel inclined to blame the casting director and/or producers for the casting choice instead of the writer. Then again, it could have been a very gay and unanimous decision. @TorqueWheeler DVD behind the scenes type comment?

it’s really case by case how much the writer will describe a characters appearance and you mostly see that sort of thing from writers who don’t have much experience yet. The more specific you are, the more you’re potentially limiting interest from studios; especially these days. Writing a character as “Jamal (nigger, 15, a raging, subhuman monster)” isn’t going to help get it picked up even if it’s exactly what you imagined when you wrote it.

With the Netflix show, this was an intentional choice though. It’s co-written and created by Stephen Graham who also stars in it. It’s his project basically so, regardless of whatever we think of the idea it’s about “toxic masculinity” and “incels” rather than nigger scum, there’s not a lot he could have done about that if he was intending to star in it.

FWIW, Jack Thorne also says he isn’t a Christ Killer despite looking like one.
