I wonder how Fat would feel about an "American Union" of the US, Canada, Central and South America. The headquarters and seat of power would be in Belize (as small and arbitrarily shitty as Brussels) and the laws and economic regulations (that held legal supremacy over the internal laws and economic regulations of all member nations) were drawn up there by an unelected collective of "true believers," faceless bureaucrats and commissioners whose loyalty was to the political project of the "American Union" over their own countries of birth.
Of course, the USA (Britain and Germany) would be running the show while occasionally letting the temperamental Canadians (French) think that they were in charge. But one thing they all would have in common would be that they were the handful of net contributors in the project i.e. they pay in more than they take out. Most of the rest of the member states are net beneficiaries, they are given more than they put in. The "US and Canada" are basically paying "Central and South America" (the Mediterranean countries and Eastern Europe) to be a part of one union, one currency and one anti-competion protectionist racket to promote (German) exports and (French) agriculture.
He'd probably love it (the EU) because it's a deluded and doomed-to-fail faux-utopian supranationalist idea. It's quasi-Communist and anti-democratic at its core. You cannot have democracy without nation states. You can't centralise an entire continent of very different countries and cultures and pretend they can all operate under the same dictats. The very idea that Germany and Greece should have the same currency and interest rates is so breathtakingly stupid that it makes you look for ulterior motives. Surely the people who make these decisions can't be that dumb? Or can they?
I didn't even vote for Brexit but the last 4 and something years have completely vindicated it in my eyes. The EU (not Europe, the EU) have behaved disgracefully in the face of a democratic vote and are purely out to punish the UK at this point. Not only have they lost their second biggest net contributor after Germany, but they want to send out a warning to countries like Poland, Hungary and even Italy, who all have growing movements questioning whether being members of the EU is good for their nations' interests. One or two more leave and the whole project will collapse like a house of cards. The fanatics in Brussels and Strasbourg know this and are getting increasingly desperate.
