As someone who dropped out of high school and can truthfully check "some college" while applying for jobs but has known a few academics, can anyone confirm that PhDs are largely scams if the school isn't paying for you to pursue them?

I believe this is correct for most disciplines. It becomes a pyramid scheme since the only qualifications are for academics. So now you need more students, who become phd candidates and ultimately professors who need students to keep the cycle going. Student loans have kept this pyramid growing for some time now. It's also why academia is considered very political, with lots of infighting and reputation mongering. And it begats same-think. It's dangerous to think or publish outside the status-quo. The whole goal of getting the phd is to get to the top (tenure) or administrative. So, yeah. A scam in the shape of a pyramid, where undergrads and rising tuition form the base and it's artificially propped up by student loans.

Hard sciences/mathematics I believe is another matter (at least in part). The world has a real economic need for experts in stem.

But that's just what I think. I really have no idea what's goin on

Both of my parents have PhDs in a hard science. My father taught but was more interested in research. Teaching is just the thing you have to do at a university to get to do that research. It’s not a PhD but got my MBA and it was easier than high school. PhDs are probably harder only because the programs make you do basic bitch teacher type busywork like reading 40 books and writing a 100 page paper. I also know a girl who fucked her mentor and moved in with his family when she was getting her phd.

As soon as I finished my MBA, I stopped calling PhDs “doctors” because I have 0 respect for academics.

Yeah. I didn't mean to imply you get a phd in hard science only to do other things, but instead that there was less pressure from the pyramid (what I consider the scam) because of the economic necessities of having people with those skills (your mom, eg) in the economy-at-large.

I wonder who forged all of the letters, documents, books, etc. written by "George Washington." They're all in the same hand, too. (I've seen some of these fakes first hand.) So one guy made up "George Washington" and all related documents. Interesting...

Did the people he corresponded with know there was no "George Washington" or was all the correspondents fake too? But that means all of the American forefathers were fake or fooled by the fake. But what of their written impressions on meeting this "George Washington" in person? more fakes? Or did they meet a fake?

Maybe it's just me, but when one man is the locus of hundreds of people and thousands of pages of documents between those people, and more documents concerning the man between those people and others outside the immediate circle I become suspicious the man may have existed.

But wait! There's more: paintings and busts of the man from multiple artists, countless descriptions and mentions from those he never even met, statues erected during his lifetime .

It's infinitely more likely that I don't exist than general Washington. There is infinitely more evidence he existed than I.
