How uncommon was it for radio shows to really fuck with the guests like OnA?

No way. Think about the corporate O&A interviews they would do where they’d have Sam & Erock interview the guest. That is unheard of and so goddamn unique. What made O&A so groundbreaking and funny was their ability to not give a fuck. Hanging up on Kristen Bell is a perfect example. And what makes it so good is none of it is fake or set up.

Howard messed with his celebrity guests, but he would play the good cop role, and have office interns (even some like John who were on-air all day long) call from the other room to start shit and rile them up. If he wanted to broach a difficult subject, he would have the interns call in to bring it up in the most ham-handed, sloppy, brutish way, then Howard would make it look like he was on their side by cleaning up the question and re-asking it under the guise of giving the celebrity a "chance to respond."

You can say he was a Coward for that (and many other things,) but Howard was primarily about his image. He knew how to make himself scarce and when it came time to promote, to do so without restraint. The problem with complimenting Howard too much is the fact that he was a jew, had jew connections, and of course had the resources to frame himself however he wanted and STILL get away with it, being jewish and all. However, The DMAN cannot allow that to spoil what he achieved. There was a time where he was without question the most irreverent troll in entertainment. He terrorized celebrities. A lot of that also could have been hype, but it worked.
