In spite of all this it's still way, way, way better written than Patrick's unreadable prose.

Like imagine a story where a young child dies in a random accident, the mother is grief-stricken and blames herself, and the other characters have to reassure her it was a freak accident and wasn't her fault. That tone except it's selling your daughter to buy expensive watches. You needed the funds, there was no other way, etc.
