I think the reason I do this thread every year is just to document the downfall of our culture. Everything really does suck now. I’m always asking if it’s because I’m older and cranky but even if that’s true things are legitimately worse.

Because there is no concept of a PPV anymore they show commercials. It’s kind of jarring because back in the day they’d go from one match to the next.

A couple of years ago one of the WrestleMania ads was for Prep. I had only heard of Prep because of Jim Norton and now here it was being advertised in a mainstream “sporting” event.

And now HHH is kissing Shawn Michaels on the mouth.

Turns out men who play fight in their underwear oiled up are gay

Triple H couldn't help himself here

Stephanie definitely pegs Paul, perhaps even better than Chyna used to.

Reckon Steph did Chris Jericho with her moss-covered three-handled family credenza a time or two as well, only true to form he was a massive baby about it and got his fragile masculinity damaged, hence his flouncing off to be in a hair band, a sketch comedy show, and AEW (all much less heterosexually suspect)

Anyone else remember that fat ff.net Frau back in the 2000s who wrote and published a Stephanie/Jericho romance saga? The infamous one that spanned more than a decade (12-13 years in the end iirc, it was abandoned on a tepid cliffhanger around Mania 32) and almost got to as high a word count as Game Of Thrones.

The weirdest part is how it puts Jericho in Hunter’s place as Steph’s consort and the heir to the company.

And how the first few years/two dozen chapters are so old that they include Benoit as a living secondary side character who is 100% nice and sane. It seems the only break the author ever took in her decade of weekly chapter-posting was a few weeks off after Benoit snapped and committed his crimes. It’s very eerie.

Those early entries also discuss faithfully and in real time the aftermath years of the InVasion angle, and the beginning of what came to be known as Ruthless Aggression Era, so in a strange way it’s like a historiographical document, albeit one from an alternate timeline.

Without the conceit of the whole thing being a legitimate sport, where the goal is to compete for and win the championship, it's all pointless, retarded nonsense. The entire business has been chipping away at that conceit for decades now. The "rules" barely exist, and there are no consequences for breaking them, which ruins the whole good guy/bad guy paradigm. So you end up with lots of identical guys doing choreographed high spots and retarded stunts just to make the crowd go oooh, ahhh, holy shit. AEW is the culmination of this, but WWE is equally unwatchable, with the tiresome skits, promo speeches, and interchangeable characters doing pointless, stupid things for no reason.
And what makes it even worse, is wrestlers these days will just instantly post on social media about their match/opponent with no pretense at all of it being anything but a work. "I'm really proud of the match we put together, I'm so thankful we got to work together and I'm so proud of the cage spot." I realize that we're well beyond the era of pretending everything is real, but there must be a middle ground between that and literally thanking your opponent that you just had a "feud" with the very next day.

Lol these modern wrestling fans have excused that as HHH making reference to a kiss he and HBK had back in 1997 during the early days of DX.

HBK and HHH kissing in '97 was never a big moment, and they did it just to piss off the fans back then because they were heels and it was early-Attitude era.

If they were going for a reference, they should've both come out in blackface eating bananas.

They're a bunch of kids, living their dream, and they've been coached to think they're just like actors.

I hate watched the end of the CM Punk match last night and it was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. They kick out of each other's finishes 20 times but fat slob Heyman nut shotting them and a few chair shots from the fag in white pants is what finally does the job? Makes no fucking sense at all. It was a great reminder of why I only bother watching old '80s and '90s stuff if I want to watch some rasslin'.

None of the modern shit can compare to how fawkin' great the old-timers were.

I've seen this era called the "Gratitude Era" which seems apt. I don't know how they expect anyone to get over when they're constantly fawning over senior citizen "legends" at their own expense. Imagine if when Stone Cold Steve Austin was getting popular in the 90s, they had him talk about what an honor it is to be in the ring with George "The Animal" Steele, and then George Steele kicks his ass.
