Listening to these shows the vibe was so light and Positive. Opie would bring up something happening around NYC AntH would riff with him, and do a couple of impressions then they would spin a tune, but it’s hard to believe how optimistic they were compared to the graveyard the show became.

The show was funnier when they had to work within FCC guidelines. Thats pretty much always the case, but especially with shock jock humor, you need that level of “can you believe what they’re getting away with?” It adds to the excitement. Otherwise you have three guys who can say whatever they want realizing they really don’t have shit to say.

They were way crazier on WNEW than on Sirius or XM. Aside from curse words the shock jock level humor was in full swing on WNEW. Stuff like Sex for Sam or 'Lesbian Couch' or whatnot were happening once a month and sometimes once a week. They always wanted to do stuff like Voyeur Bus to show how heterosexual they all were. And get women into the studio. They could get away with far worse stuff when they worked for CBS compared to the satellite companies.

First two or three months into the show on XM they had the "show we can't talk about" which involved getting women into the studio and getting them drunk. XM put an end to all of that immediately. And they basically stopped with the faggy softcore porno on radio that they had always done. Meanwhile Stern was doing sex machine rides at Sirius and producing shows on his stations that were basically Penthouse Forum reads.

All the old sex bits from WNEW mostly suck. I just get douche chills listening to faggots like Norton and Anthony talk about how hot it is when two women make out with each other. Like Sam's AJ Poopieschitz character. "I like the tits and the pussies".

To be completely fair even if they had the creativity and energy to do crazy shit on XM / Sirius it would have never been allowed. This is the same company that told them the Physical Fitness Challenge had rules where the sit ups section could only take 20 minutes. And that the eggnog drinking challenge was too risqué. O&A was always about pushing the boundaries but the boundaries eventually became so restrictive they couldn’t even dance around them.

I remember most of their WNEW sex bits being done in the second half of the show. The first half of the show was the familiar O&A type banter, then they'd segue into the sex and shock stunts during "drive time". It was mostly just embarrassing jeering, leering and hooting, and was rarely funny or memorable. I remember thinking how funny it was that something as lame and gay as Sex For Sam was their eventually undoing, as when it aired, it was no more retarded than any of their other antics were. But the whole cathedral thing really struck a nerve.

The sex antics were where their Stern mimicry was most blatant. They were always trying to out-Stern Stern with the "wild" in-studio stripers and whores, and in hindsight it is indeed pretty hilarious. Here in 2024, Howard Stern is fixated on penises and daddy, Nana is swishier than Liberace's pool boy, and Norton is literally married to a man. But back then, they were all wildly aroused by local prostitutes penetrating themselves with whiffle ball bats

Wow, what a DEEP cut. You really summed up a decade of the show by referencing 1 of the 10 clips they played during their "please pretend we are currently better than ever" late stage satellite era... A clip you've probably listened to 500 times instead of going back further.

Because you never really listened to them on WAAF or WNEW, you only heard them bashing themselves from SXM when the show was on its deathbed and they had a vested interest in making you think that they were in their fucking prime at almost 60 years old respectively.

The FACT of the matter is, O&A were the Kings of prank calls and trolling at WAAF. On WNEW, they became the kings of publicity stunt entertainment. By the satellite era they became the Kings of.... slightly edgy small talk about the weather and whatever was playing on the TV news. There were a couple of solid bits on XM in the same vein as the original O&A show, but it never really came close again and Auntie being jaded and Anti-Opie was too obvious.

"Why is everybody laughing so much??" Shit, probably because they're young, having fun, getting paid, and genuinely making each other laugh. There were plenty of segments where O&A played it straight and withheld laughter to make the bit more gooder, but as The DMAN is sure, you have never heard those segments because you're all Jonny Come Lately Satellite Babies Who Don't Know Shit About The O&A Show.

And sometimes that part of the career is pretty guud. Compare Pink Floyds first album to “The Wall” and then to their last. Compare the Rolling Stones first records to “Some Girls” then to their last album. Or Genesis’ first album to “The Lamb” and then to their last (no offense @UnPRePared ).

I said it before, and you know i’m a satellite baby, but the 2004-2010 era listen pretty good. Most shit from 2011-2014 is garbage though.
