Opie found out Anthony was a piece of human garbage when he went to Anthony's house for the first time and saw them living like puerto ricans... Shitty house, with a beat-up shitbox vehicle on blocks in the driveway, abandoned baby carriages and random toys. Opie said many times this was the moment he realized Anthony might be a serial killer or a scumbag and regretted breaking him into the business. Have you ever had one of those moments where you were going to be friends with someone, until you find out something insane, or see something you really don't like? Then it all makes sense to you... That's how Opie saw who Anthony really was.
Opie found out Anthony was a pedophile when Ant started making comments about lusting after the Olsen Twins and Jon Benet Ramsey. Anthony would go into dead serious discussions with himself about how he can't wait for them to turn 18 in a few years, and how Jon Benet was not worth abducting and molesting because she wasn't even all that hot anyway. Opie was disturbed by these comments, because there was no hint of humor whatsoever from Anthony. And they did a comedy show after all, so Opie tolerated it thinking "maybe he's just trying to hard to fit in with my cringe style of humor, he's a beginner after all. I have to be patient with him."
Opie found out Anthony was a degenerate when Ant admitted that he wanted to bang his own cousin, and had a legitimate crush on her for many years, and that he as a man in his 50s and 60s admits that he "absolutely would have" banged her if she offered. Side note: Does anyone remember how Opie reacted to the story of Anthony smoking crack with his family? The DMAN can't imagine Opie woulda just said "Oh, okay."
Opie found out Anthony was a psychotic hypocrite in the mid-2000's when Obama was running, then won, and was re-elected. Race relations in America provided great fodder for bits, but O&A never did them because they were too busy listening to Anthony's occasionally amusing race rage. Opie even took this low point of the show, and shined the shit into a pearl: with the Candy Crush music playing, and in a rare move Anthony proved to still have it in him when he played along and ranted more passionately as the music drowned him out. See, that's an on-the-fly moment you'd get on a SHOW with ideas for little fun things ("bits" as we call them =)... Not just a recording of some assholes whining they don't make any commercials with smart white men in them.
Opie found out how worthless and disgusting Stupid Jim Norton really is, when he married another man and continues to live in irony-poisoned denial.
Anthony found out what "doing a show" is like, without the professional, the boss, the ringleader, the psycho, the steerer of the ship, and BOTH halves of the creative genius behind the Opie & Anthony brand (and subsequent radio show) doing pretty much all the prep work and brainstorming. While he drinks in the corner and naps on the air... literally.
