It’s fairly obvious as a listener that Opie likes to make up stories for the air and he definitely played up his family’s poverty so people might not look at him for what he was, a rich white kid who went to college in the 80s and spun records for a decade until finding Cumia, who catapulted him to success.

Opie would complain his parents made them all plow with their brand new bikes. Completely being oblivious to the fact that a large family all getting brand new bikes was hardly impoverished conditions. And that sometimes he had to spend summers at his parents' second home that was oceanfront property. Which is basically the same as growing up in wartorn Mogadishu and living off of uncooked rice.

Anthony was the one who really grew up poor. Having to rob his idiot father of coin change just to buy food and then getting beaten for it anyways. Or his father stealing his plane tickets and cashing them in for money and bus tickets. Then not graduating from school and working as a day laborer and contractor. While Opie is doing cocaine as Spuds Buckley and shoving FudgieWudgie bars up his ass.

Also Anthony did not catapult Opie to success. Anthony was horrible on radio for years aside from his song parodies. Practically everything he did in the early O&A years was him just pothead laughing or repeating jokes. It took him years to become confident on radio. Anthony was not the 'And Anthony' of O&A for a couple of years.

So how much of this was stolen from Fez? The similarities with Opie and Ron Diaz were explored in another thread, along with certain jokes Norton may or may not have taken from Mr. Whatley. When they did the whole Fez/Opie onion bags story similarity on R&F, the theft could have been in the other direction.

Ideally we'd need someone with knowledge of the WAAF and WNEW days to answer whether Opie talked much about his mother back then.

According to his own narrative, wasn't she a stay-at-home mother to 6 or whatever kids and married to a financially irresponsible chancer who struggled to provide for his family? She would have been in a constant state of stress. Papa Hughes no doubt had the Irish curse too so she wasn't even getting good dickings to iron out her nerves.
