Fight Club:
Wasn't funny. Felt like a nerd's idea of a funny black comedy. It was mostly try-hard violent comedy. Isn't it hilarious they keep punching each other and enjoying it! ISN'T THAT FUCKED UP AND IRONIC HAHAHA! Narrator spews constant smarmy, philosophical narration that never, EVER let's up. The transgressive, post-modern bullshit has aged so poorly cause it's so unrealistic: Who the fuck goes to grieving groups for attention, and it relieves their insomnia? What? And it's supposedly "addicting"? And this supposedly has to do with the plight of all modern men? FUCK OFF.
I know Scorsese is an influence on Fincher and that Goodfellas in particular must've been a template for the movie's structure since it's an endless montage but which is another problem, the movie is an endless montage of dreary, perfectionist over-stylized shots and set pieces without a Scorsese's direction to keep it engaging or at least psychologically interesting. Id rather hear a semi-dimwitted mobster do voice over than just Chuck Palahniuk spoken through dull ass Edward Norton.
Fincher is a campy director, everything is so overly stylized that he can't allow characters to be anything other than caricatures. Nice paying more attention to the visuals instead of the characters, stupid. It's like we got it. Edward Norton is an emasculated average loser, and Pitt is a madcap, anarchistic masculine Übermensch, you don't need to have them say and act this way to hammer it home literally every fucking scene, which is exactly what he did in Se7en. Morgan Freeman is smart, Pitt is stupid, and no major development for either character.
Then there's the weird pseudo-rom com dialogue between Norton and Boham Carter, but with a dark ironic twist: "Okay you can have the parasite group meetings, those are all yours, but I want upper bowel cancer" "No I want upper bowel cancer!" --- FUCK OFF, it's not funny.
Edward Norton is a dull actor even when he's nailing a scene. Brad Pitt was the least boring part and did the best acting, but still, boring. Helena Bonham Carter is ugly.
Gone Girl:
It's just a satire meant to be watched by middle-to-middle-upper-class married couples with narcissistic disorders, I'm not married or in my late thirties or 40s so I dont give a shit; it's also evidently meant to be like a fucked up version of a cheesy Lifetime movie since there's tons of awkward fade outs and fade ins from one scene to another and at least one awful looking boom shot as well as fairly bland interior scenes of houses and offices, all hallmarks of cheesy lifetime movie cinematography, not to mention the domestic subject matter. I'll give Fincher this though, he didn't make it a simple "Affleck = bad, shitty husband and Rosamund Pike = the misunderstood wife who's a victim who's crazy!" It's not that; At different points in the film, you're meant to sort of empathize with both but in a very detached way because they're such awful people and this I imagine would work better and in more interesting ways for couples who are married viewing the film, taking sides with the characters, But I don't give a rat's ass cause I'm not married. Nice making a subtle and expensive movie for a very narrow demo, stupid.
Rosamund Pike's acting was corny and annoying, and she hit the wall pretty hard. She used to be heavenly looking circa 2004. Ben Affleck was actually perfect for the role, a dim-witted husband who tries to please everyone but ends up always acting like a selfish shithead.
His best movies are The Game and Zodiac. Se7en isn't bad either.
Both get a thumbs down and no recommendation from me.
