Jefferson Dublanc

He became an ace (5 kills) in a single afternoon while escorting bombers near Guadalcanal. He continued to escort the bombers despite discovering his plane had a fuel leak after take off. He told the rest of his flight he wouldn't make it back, and to send a search plane for him when they returned to base. He engaged multiple targets before taking damage and ditching in the ocean. He swam to an enemy occupied island despite being severely wounded and kept himself alive for several days taking shelter in an abandoned hut. He was found by natives who traded him to a friendly tribe for a sack of rice.

Despite being awarded the Medal of Honor, he did not consider himself a hero

"Most people cannot price out the exact amount of money they are worth, but I know exactly how much I am worth: one 10lb sack of rice."
