Sometimes I think that Nana got popular simply due to a lack of options. Stern was never consistently funny ( entirely dependent upon Artie and / or Jackie ), and everything else on the radio was hack morning zoo shit. Nana's outdated references and lack of culture got a pass because there simply wasn't anyone else like him on the radio.

If he were to be starting out now, he'd be a YouTuber who gets less than 5k views a video. Right place, right time.
