For being a wop who grew up in 1970s Long Island, Cumia isn't very Italian

Normally this wouldn't stick out very much, but considering how much of an identarian and race obsessed numbnuts Cumia is, it seems odd that he rarely references his own ethnic group/culture outside of Goodfellas or Sopranos references or the occasional self depreciating joke

Generally Italian Americans are one of the few American sub-cultures that really grasp onto their identity and still noticeably stick out to an extent, especially older generations. Yet you could listen to hundreds of hours of O&A and never realize Anthony is a swarthy Sicilian except for his name.

It's always " I'm white, I'm a white male, it's so hard being white! "

Obviously family is one of the defining factors in Italian American identity, which Tranthony lacks.

But I still find it strange that a man so obsessed with identity has almost zero connection or leaning towards embracing his actual people.

I can’t tell you how many Pizzerias I’ve been to in my life where they had pictures of mobster media on the walls. At most, maybe a picture of Sinatra and the Rat Pack (still mobbed up). So in that regard Nana is in the bellcurve. It’s never a picture of Travolta (he’s done everything he can pass as straight and white like nana ), any of the Cuomos, Rudy Giuliani, or a professional athlete save if you’re in the NY/NJ area a picture of Joe DiMaggio.

Most American ginzo wops have no idea about their culture. They know Rome was an empire and Caesar was an emperor and they may know what part of the boot they come from. The eat cheap pasta, cheap olive oil and nonna stiring the Sunday sauce (which is American) Tomatoes were indigenous to the America’s and like coffee and chocolate brought over from the new world. They know Italian American culture : mobsters and pizza.

Most Italian-Americans are from the south of Italy, which did jack shit to contribute to Italy other than pizza and the mafia. All of the explorers, Renaissance artists, and 19th-20th inventors and engineers came from the north and those people act more like Germans and Swiss than sweaty assholes who live in New Jersey. Italian-Americans are divorced from Italian culture because they always have been going back to their ancestors who lived in Italy.

I disagree with your analysis

One, I purposefully made it a point to separate Italian culture from Italian American culture. Even 100 years ago the culture of Italian Americans was different from the culture of Italian's because Italian Americans are generally Southern Italian, so the language and customs have never 100% correlated with " real " Italian culture to begin with

Two, Italian American culture isn't just mobsters and pizza. Italian American Mother's and Grandmother's have family cook books full of recipes, they make homemade bread, pastas, sweets, etc. Catholicism plays a massive role in shared experience. It's not uncommon for Italian Americans over the age of 50 to actual be able to speak an Italian dialect. Half of the identifiable " Americana " tropes come from Italian American culture and numerous everyday words or slang in America comes from Italian American culture. It's all just so common that people don't really think of it as being originated from Italian immigrants.

I honestly think this whole " ITALIAN AMERICANS ARE CULTURELESS SLOBS " stereotype actually comes from The Sopranos, as it's a running joke in the show. Just in my family I have two Uncles around Cumia's age who can speak Italian, it's really not that uncommon.

I write all this to emphasize the point that Cumia is a familyless queer who could probably never befriend other Italian guys because they thought he was a fag and thus is completely detached from his own culture group.
