Comics on the show/Norton

@LingerLonger brought up an excellent point, and it should be addressed. Im going to be repeating some stuff from the original post, and wanted to give some credit.

Once Jim was settled in, I believe Opie gave him some leeway to invite his friends. There were some real stinkers (Sean Rouse, Yoshi, etc). An ensuing on air fight occurred with Opie rightfully telling Jim he had a shit comic in. That in turn was Opie making comics wait to come in the studio. Only a couple comics could carry the whole show, actually just 1 or 2. Those being Burr, Oneal (sometimes), Voss, and the great Colin Quinn. Bobby Kelly and Joe Derosa were guests, and rightfully so. Jim was bad enough that XM wanted a replacement for him, I think maybe a year into them joining.

Why did Jim think he had the authority to invite comics on the show ? Colin called him out, and rightfully so. You are not the booker, and it is not your show.

De Rosa, Birbiglia, Kelly, etc were not in that zone. They were on because Norton knew they were "below" him.

Norton was a gatekeeper, and it was a 1 way street. If you had nothing to offer, good luck bro. Otto was the victim of this, a year would go by without him on.

It's all over the place, but should be addressed. One more thing, DL motherfucked him due to the fact that Vice show was garbage. I will give credit, he is/was funny too see live.

At the end of the day, Jim acted like he had clout and wasn’t afraid to stand up to management or whatever but it was completely fake. Just like everything else about him. He’s chip and the guy who got sad when Ozzy left his books, that’s it.

He was (and probably still is) living in a constant state of fear that he would lose a job that was going to be hard to replace. That’s why he’d call in from the road when they’d have Bill Burr or Patrice on.

Norton was above Sam and Danny, but below Opie and Anthony. Opie delegated something that he claims is his area of expertise and it fell flat a few times. If it became a real pattern, Opie was going to get the calls from management, not Jimmy.

So Opie took a more active role in managing on air guests, rightfully reducing Norton’s scope. Norton, the stand up comic, wasn’t even as funny as Anthony so why was he even a permanent third mic?

So yes, he was a gatekeeper because the only value add he had was access to comics and random one liners. He had already shown his judgment on who to bring on was terrible so he was being extra guarded.

In the end, he outlasted all of them so I guess good for him, even though it probably has less to do with talent and more to do with him being a human cockroach.

In feb 2005 norton brought a female-stephen lynch comedian on the show and backed her as very funny, which means he was trying to have sex with her. And it turned into one of the worst guests. She couldn't play live, kept restarting her songs and got zero laughs. After one song the only thing the bbbboys minus jimmy could say was that was.... interesting. She wasn't exactly thrilled with that.
